I am a Hawaiian that lives in Kuwait. My family is from Oahu, I was raised in Texas, and the ocean is the part of Hawaiʻi I carry with me.
I could spend days at the beach. Not doing much — just being near it. That is what I was trying to get onto a screen.
The other half is Japanese animation. I grew up watching it and it became a love of mine. Same Ocean is those two put together.
The name is the plain truth of it. The water off Hawaiʻi and the water off Japan is the same water. One ocean, two places I love.
Sixteen pieces, all the same coast.
A pagoda with its windows lit. A wooden house among the pines. A lookout over the water. A tent on a cliff edge with a fire going. A lighthouse turning its beam across a dark bay.
Some have the cherry blossom, some have the red maple, so the set runs spring through autumn. Three of them are at night.
There are no people in any of them. Every one is a place somebody could be, and the light is already on. It leaves the seat open.
