For years I didn't notice that two things I love were pointing at the same place.

I'm Hawaiian. I grew up with ocean on every side of me. I also grew up on Japanese animation, and those were the worlds I lived in as a kid.

Then I started drawing this coast, and there it was. Japan the way an island person sees it. From the water. From a cliff. From somewhere you have to climb to, where the only thing to do is look.

This coast isn't real. It's a homage to a country I love through the stories it made, and to the one thing I'll never get tired of, which is sitting somewhere high with the sea in front of me and nowhere to be.

One coast, from morning to dark. The blossom at midday. The lantern lit at dusk. A fire on the edge of the rock with the stars out. The lighthouse doing its one job all night while the fireflies come up out of the grass.

Every piece has a place to sit and the water already there. Somebody carried wood up a cliff to build that little lookout, for no reason except the view. That's the whole idea.

Hawaiʻi is on one edge of that ocean and Japan is on the other. Same water.
